This course has many trees that line the fairways and there are hills that may cause uneven lies. Water hazards come into play on three holes. Donald Ross was particularly proud of his bunkering, notably on holes #12 (par 3) and #13 (par 4). This club was originally founded in 1895 and has been listed by the USGA as one of the first 100 clubs established in the U.S. It was also named to "GOLF Magazine's" 1995 list of the "First 100 Clubs in America." "GOLFWEEK" ranked it 36th among "America's 100 Best Classical Courses" in 1997, 41st in 1998 and 46th in 1999. "GOLF Magazine" selected it 82nd among the "Top 100 Courses in the U.S." for 1995, 96th in 1997 and 87th in 1999. Babe Zaharias won the 1954 U.S. Women's Open on this course and Hollis Stacy won the same tournament here in 1984. Salem Country Club hosted the 2001 U.S. Senior Open, won by Bruce Fleisher.
