Is it one that is harder than your ability but is beautiful? Would you rather play Whistling Straits or the Disney course in Orlando? For me generally it is one that missed shots don't always result in a lost ball. I also like to play local muni's to practice my game without worrying about errant shots. But a tough course is nice on occasion, like playing a course with history. Oddly enough, I got started playing golf on a heavily wooded course that kept kicking my ball back into the fairway - thought, well this is a fairly easy game to play. Little did I know...

From tee to green all aspects of the course apply. If a tee box is a mess, guaranteed to dislike the course. If the greens are not true, guaranteed to dislike the course. Most importantly if the speed of play is slow, guaranteed not to return.

I like to play courses that are on the edge of how I play. I want to be challenged but not beaten up.
